This kind of weapon, a German "Bidenhaender" (which means double hands), was used around the first half of the 16th century.

The upper blade of of our reproduction sword is equipped with a broadening, called Parierhaken. It was used as additional guard. The section between the first and second guard is not sharp but covered with leather, as is the hilt.

The blade is made of handforged carbon steel; grinded blunt.
Hilt and pommel are screwed.

Length: 1.38 cm / 54.3"
Weight: 3.1 kg / 6.8 lbs.

According to G. Seifert (sword - rapier - sabre, Hamburg 1962) the lansquenets equipped with such double-edged swords earned twice the pay and had to produce a certain certificate ("Master of the Long Sword") before they were hired as mercenary soldiers.
