In the 12th century with the introduction of the pot helmet, the individual knight could no longer be recognized by his face, and another means of identification became necessary.
Therefore their shields were painted in boldly contrasting colours and in particular the crusaders (especially the so-called Teutonic Knights) choose a cross as their emblem.
We are offering a reenactors' copy of such an iron shield in white colour with a red cross, the most common crusaders' sign.
Shield dimensions:
68 cms.(27") x 49cms.(19")
weight : 2.7 kgs.(6 lbs.)
These shields are steel shields, reinforced in the centre and with a wooden grip attached by 2 screws.
We send these shields dismantled to save a lot of extra packing, as shown on our bottom photo.
