In the 12th century with the introduction of the pot helmet, the individual knight could no longer be recognized by his face, and another means of identification became necessary.
Therefore their shields were painted in boldly contrasting colours and because armorial bearings were designed for battle, fierce animals were displayed as well.
Out of our production we have left a few shields unpainted for modern knights who want to paint their own design on their shield.
These shields are made from plywood (thickness 1 cm / 0.4"), painted white and lined with linen.
3 strong leather straps are fitted on the back as to be seen on our right photo.
It is mainly for decoration > plywood splinter under heavy load.
Shield dimensions:
118 cm (46.5") high x 60 cm (23.6") wide
(measured around the curve the width is 80 cm or 31.5")
Weight: 3.5 kgs.(7.7 lbs.)
