This copy of an old sun dial original was primarily meant for decoration.
But if you take your time and concern yourself with this interesting piece you will find out that the time can actually be read in the "bowl" and the instrument can be used as a clock.
A compass shows the North-South direction. As water-levels had not yet been invited two weights were used to fathom it. The "bowl" then has to be adjusted angular according to the latitude you live on (scale from 0 to 60 degrees).
We do not know however how the figures on the shadow nail and the second time scale are to be interpreted. We are grateful for any hints!
