The chapel-de-fer (literally: iron cap) was used in medieval Europe by foot soldiers and knights from the 13th century onward.
Its broad rim shielded blows from hand weapons and offered protection from missiles from above.
Our reproduction was developed in the UK for reenactment and is suitable for all those who need a strong head cover.
The midrib adds to the protection. No metal links were used; these turned up with later models only.
The helmet fits everybody up to hat size of 7 3/4 (inner circumference = 63 cms or 24.8"). It is fitted with an adjustable leather lining inside and a leather chin strap.
It is made from 14 gauge steel (2 mm or 0.078").
Total height: 24 cms (9.4 inch).
Diameter from rim to rim (measured from front to back): 35.5 cm / 14"
Weight: 2.6 kg (approx. 5.7 lbs).
